Location, Planning and Building a National Distribution Centre (NDC)
Carlsberg’s Logistics Division manages the distribution of mixed loads to retail depots, wholesalers and major multiples. Following the sale of its Burton brewery, Carlsberg sought to build a new NDC in Northampton.
Davies & Robson helped the brewer assess available options, calculate the size of facility needed and draft a comprehensive specification taking into account hourly delivery of cans and buffer stocks etc.
Davies & Robson provided support to Carlsberg’s logistics team during the NDC building programme and worked closely with the design and building subcontractors on this substantial project which is located next to Junction 15a of the M1.
Development of Delivery Standards
Davies & Robson formulated recommendations on the workload which a Carlsberg retail distribution crew can handle per day. Discrepancies in various delivery teams’ volumes were significant and were not all accounted for by geographical differences.
A set of recommended standards was researched taking into account speed, type of road and the number of cases moved. These were tested against tachograph information, delivery records etc. and provided a solid tool for union negotiations.
