Farillon
Supply Chain Strategy Modelling
Farillon Pharmaceutical Distribution is part of Europe’s largest healthcare wholesale and retailing operation. The company, recently successful in winning the Department of Health contract for the distribution of childhood vaccines, provides a comprehensive service, including stock procurement, storage, picking and packing, through to delivery. The company delivers to most GP practices on a weekly basis and to all wholesalers and hospitals within the UK. The operational infrastructure centres on a predominantly chilled warehouse in Romford, Essex, plus three depots situated on sister company sites at Bristol, Stoke on Trent and Glasgow. Goods are picked from the central storage at Romford for either local delivery or overnight trunking to the out bases, from where product is delivered to the end customers.
In support of its continuing market leadership goal, the company committed to introduce a next day delivery service for chilled and ambient products, and to increase the capacity of the delivery network. Davies & Robson was engaged to help Farillon determine how best to achieve these objectives.
The conclusion of a study, using Davies & Robson’s Supply Chain Strategy model, was that a move to next day delivery could be made effectively without a need to increase the operating bases and that expansion of storage facilities should be on current sites, with the Stoke on Trent site favoured.
Graham Harding, Farillon Finance and Operations Director commented: “Davies & Robson has provided valuable assistance in determining how best to achieve our objectives and we have now commenced the implementation of the new service. We are very pleased with the progress made.”
