Acquisition and Implementation of AirKiosk booking engine

From its first take-off in February 2003, the performance of low cost airline Jet2.com, a division of Channel Express Air Services Limited, has been smooth and serene. Operating from Leeds/Bradford International Airport – and now from Belfast, too – the airline is already an established presence at key European destinations.

How does a new airline get off the ground? If it’s to make money in the low-cost sector, the choice of booking system is crucial because that’s the main marketing power unit. For Jet2.com, a fast acquisition program was essential; from a ‘go’ decision in August 2002, the booking system needed to be acquired and up and running by early December 2002, in order to take bookings for the February 2003 launch flights.

To help Jet2.com in the acquisition and implementation of the internet-based booking system and payment card processing. Roger Trigell, Davies & Robson director responsible for IT and Strategy, was appointed IT advisor and a member of the initial project board. A decision was made to purchase the AirKiosk system from Sutra of Boston, Massachusetts, and for it to host the system on behalf of Jet2.com. The implementation of the booking engine was entirely successful and the airline has been growing at such a rate that it operates additionally from Manchester, Belfast to destinations as close as Gatwick and Edinburgh and as faraway as Tenerife.

Steve Lee, Jet2.com’s commercial director, has said of Roger Trigell "During the set up of Jet2.com, Roger was an active member of the project team and has since played an important role in providing IT advice to us."
