In these days of hyper-competition, even the most dynamic and enlightened of organisations need periodically to review all aspects of their operations. Which is why Robert Bosch commissioned Davies & Robson to conduct a warehouse audit.
In the UK, Robert Bosch supplies power tools, power tool accessories and automotive components from its distribution centre in Uxbridge. The company’s warehouse facilities were already of a very high standard, with modern equipment and a good warehouse management system. However, with around 47,000 stock keeping units, and some 3.3 to 3.4 million order lines per annum for delivery to 8,500 delivery points on a next-day demand basis (provided an order is placed by 15:00hrs), the company’s logistics management decided that an objective overview might help highlight areas where fine tuning was possible.
The study was designed to provide a fast, cost effective overview of the existing operation and, where appropriate, suggest improvements. In addition, the warehouse operations were benchmarked using the Davies & Robson database.
The study confirmed that staffing levels were at an optimum level, commensurate with the operating methods in use, and that above average performance was being achieved in terms of use of systems and technology, management and control, operational design, and monitoring of key performance indicators. Nevertheless, Davies & Robson experts were able to identify a number of areas where cost reduction, or productivity and service improvements were possible, some of which represented “quick wins” that could be implemented without further evaluation. Others are now undergoing more detailed evaluation and trials by the Bosch Logistics Team.
