Development Strategy
UDG is one of the UK’s leading warehousing and distribution companies specialising in pharmaceuticals. As part of its development strategy UDG continually review areas for change and improvement and recently commissioned two projects:
Implementation risk analysis and benchmarking review
Risk Analysis Assessment - Davies & Robson based the risk assessment on UDG’s historic performance with new clients pre and post implementation. Critical issues in achieving a successful implementation were established, followed by assessing standards of best practice for each key implementation area. Against these standards Davies & Robson quantified UDG’s performance with their clients relative to the issues and appropriate KPIs. As well as highlighting the successes, issues were investigated, including how UDG overcame them and how the operation was brought back to the required standards. From this, UDG has furthered its implementation processes to make the transition as smooth as possible for the client.
Benchmarking Review - Utilising an agreed range of unit costs and performance standards Davies & Robson benchmarked UDG’s service offering relative to other anonymously presented 3PL comparatives within the pharmaceutical sector. This allowed UDG to consider their relative standing in the pharmaceutical sector and thus the degree of emphasis required in selling against the perceived risks of change.
Parcel Delivery Review - Following identification of a range of scenarios, Davies & Robson modelled resource requirements for each and developed a cost model which illustrated by scenario:
Radial delivery resource levels
Trunking delivery schedule to service outbases
KPIs covering fleet utilisation and efficiency factors
Full costings
With assistance from Davies & Robson, UDG now clearly understands the critical implementation issues relating to pharmaceutical companies moving their supply chain operations and the costs of implementing an in-house parcel delivery operation. As a result UDG are looking forward to delivering an enhanced service, better understanding their clients’ needs and realising some of the opportunities found.
