Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest and most dynamic in the UK. With a turnover of £1.5bn and 15,000 employees, this two-site central London Trust has an ambitious agenda: to minimise the environmental impact, and a recognition of the need to change and develop the Supply Chain.
To fulfil the needs of the community, there are plans to expand the hospitals on both sites, inevitably leading to even greater pressure on the inbound Supply Chain. Working closely with the in-house Procurement team, Davies & Robson’s were initially engaged to review this established and complex Supply Chain, gathering sufficient data and practical information.
Using modelling tools to project the future needs of the Trust, it was clear the requirements of the operations, and the scale of the inbound flows for both sites, could not be met with the existing model.
Pressures of congestion and environmental compliance meant the Trust was already exploring the possibility of an Urban Consolidation Centre. The modelling supported that theory, confirming the future scale of the off-site logistics facility, and the benefits it would bring both operationally and environmentally.
External logistics providers were engaged with to establish the optimum solution. Working with the in-house team we were able to make a selection that most closely matched the needs of the Trust, the beginning of a process to streamline the operations. With the constraints around this part of London it has become clear other hospitals and businesses could also benefit from our services.
Key to the whole project was achieving the rigorous sign off of the business case for these changes to go ahead. The outputs from the work were used to support this. Full approval for the Business Case was granted.
“We all felt we knew what we needed but without the analytical back up that Davies & Robson have provided we weren’t able to quantify these benefits. The help with the strategic positioning of this project has been invaluable.”
