Radius Benefits from a Formal Tender Process

Radius Systems has been manufacturing and supplying pipes and fittings to leading utilities and construction companies since 1969 when it introduced the first polyethylene pipe to the UK. Radius offers the global market unique solutions spanning the entire pipe lifecycle. Central to the business is the development and manufacture of plastic pipes and fittings for the gas, water and waste water sectors, and producing solutions for the telecoms market. Product design incorporates simple installation, optimised for new and replacement infrastructure, and system longevity. The business is focused upon providing leading solutions that meet pipeline challenges across each market sector, whilst achieving the highest standards of safety and quality throughout the supply chain.

Radius telecoms supply a wide range of ducting and next generation access products. The business develops new product solutions and supply many of the world’s top telecom operators, integrators and installers.

Market leading product solutions also require logistics services that fully and consistently meet customer requirements, including accurate delivery on time and in full. The Radius solution combines the highest product and service standards to its customers.

Radius Systems has manufacturing plants at Hilcote, Derbyshire and Lurgan, County Armagh. Products are delivered throughout the UK using a core fleet of tractors and trailers, some equipped with specialist crane off load equipment, supported during peak periods with sub-contractors. Many deliveries are to construction project sites which bring their own challenges.

Transport services for their UK delivery requirements have been outsourced over many years with third party contractors. Review by the Radius supply chain team recognised that automatic renewal is sometimes the easy option but may not be the best approach.

It is easy to allow any relationship to become complacent Radius’s management team wanted to ensure continued market leading transport services aligned with strong commercial arrangements for the future. Radius appointed Davies & Robson to manage a full market tender process including contractual negotiations with the appointed contractor to ensure innovative transport services, so important to the ‘customer promise’, are consistently delivered to demanding cost and service criteria.

Davies & Robson undertook the market competitive tender process that included preparation of a full specification of requirement, tender documentation, data profiles and management of market responses. This approach ensures accurate comparative responses and a clear understanding of requirements for all parties. Prior to final selection, preparation of contracts and negotiation was conducted with the preferred contractor, in conjunction with the Radius team.

"The process adopted by Davies & Robson, and the result we have achieved, has provided a real step change in the relationship with our transport contractor. Achievement of improved cost control, service levels and the introduction of market leading innovation were all benefits of the process that will ensure we exceed customer expectations in the future. Their advice as to how we can improve the way we manage the contractual relationship in the future was also invaluable.”
