This two day course is aimed at anyone who has direct responsibility for the day-to-day operations of a distribution or transport fleet, and will be relevant for any sector and size of operation.  Delegates can be confident of going away with a range of ideas to improve operational efficiency and reduce the costs of their own operations. 

Course Outline

  • Transport market overview and trends – An outline of the transport market, the trends and challenges.
  • Transport operations management –- An examination of the role of transport operations management, transport planning and management tools. We also include an overview of legislation and keeping up to date with the areas of change.
  • Transport costs and their management – We look at the main costs, key performance indicators and the principles of transport planning and efficiency.
  • Purchasing transport services – We consider how to avoid the pitfalls and approach the purchase of external services, from transport spot hire to logistics contracts.
  • Reviewing the operation – How to examine your operation and make informed decisions regarding change and addressing strategic challenges.
  • Practical exercises & workshops – Throughout the course, a number of workshops will develop the lessons learned and apply them to a real-world transport problem. By the end of the course, delegates will have knowledge of distribution and transport operations and be able to critically review their own operations in order to develop performance and cost improvement ideas.

  • The role of the warehouse - A brief examination of why we have warehouses and the different roles they play within the modern supply chain.
  • Design & Layout - An introduction to the key principles of Warehouse Design and Layout.
  • Storage and Picking - An introduction to the principles of storage systems and picking methodologies.
  • Operational Management - Key tools and methods to improve the day-to-day operational management of your warehouse. Includes resource planning, resource allocation, the principles of good man management and the need for discipline within the warehouse environment.
  • Inventory Control - An examination of the importance of keeping an accurate record on warehouse operations, and performance and techniques, to keep inventory accurate.
  • Measures and KPIs - An interactive session to develop the concept of metrics, key ratios and Key Performance Indicators, how to use them and the pitfalls of getting it wrong.
  • Lean and Six Sigma - Finally, a brief overview of Lean and Six Sigma principles and how these overlap with the course content.

Course outline

As a one day course it is structured into a series of modules, each introducing a specific set of tools and techniques. Delegates practice and apply them to a set of data in a series of supporting exercises, building at each stage on what they have learnt.

  • The course starts by looking at data sources within a business; where data can come from, how it might look and its potential uses.
  • We consider data quality and how to check and repair data; looking at common issues and mistakes and how these can impact on results.
  • This is followed by an introduction to spreadsheet techniques for data manipulation and how to analyse the data to produce meaningful and useful outputs.
  • We continue by looking at how to combine, cross reference, and link data sets from different sources containing different information.
  • Summarising data is key to understanding and communicating within business and we develop techniques to assist delegates in this area
  • Finally we consider ways of presenting the findings from our analysis in reports and presentations.
