To achieve an effective system implementation you need a full time ‘Implementation Structure Organisation’. We favour a Project Steering Group, Project Team, Project Manager, System Owner and Key Users, consisting of the most experienced people from within your organisation in key roles. System implementation needs to be over managed - not providing enough resource is often a cause of problems.

• The supply chain system supplier will be committed to providing the right level of support, available when and where required.
• Training requirements will be determined at the beginning of the project, in particular the most appropriate combinations of on-line learning, formal training courses and Train the Trainer.
• Key users will play a prime role in data migration, developing acceptance scenarios and producing scripts for tests as well as carrying out the tests.

In the system set up we believe there should be a minimum of 3 system environments: training, testing and production (live). Careful planning is required on how the cut over to live running will be made. Will there first be a smaller scale pilot implementation? Will a period of parallel running be possible?
