Automation For Smaller Warehouses

Automation For Smaller Warehouses

One of the most common questions we receive as a consultancy is whether automation makes sense for smaller warehouses, particularly those under 15,000 square feet. The answer is increasingly yes. Automation is no longer reserved for larger distribution centres and if scaled correctly it can deliver measurable gains in productivity, accuracy, and space utilisation, even in smaller, more compact facilities.

For smaller operations, the key is selecting right-sized solutions. Technologies such as vertical lift modules (VLMs), automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) designed for micro-fulfilment, conveyor and sortation systems, pick-to-light solutions, and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) can significantly increase picking speed and reduce errors. In tight footprints, goods-to-person systems and high-density racking paired with barcode or RFID scanning often unlock 30–50% space savings while improving order accuracy.

The benefits extend beyond throughput. Automation reduces reliance on increasingly scarce labour, improves inventory visibility, enhances workplace safety, and creates predictable operating costs. In many cases, smaller warehouses see a return on investment within two to four years, particularly where order volumes are rising or SKU counts are expanding.

Funding options are also more flexible than many assume. Capital expenditure (CAPEX) remains common, but operating leases, equipment-as-a-service (EaaS), robotics-as-a-service (RaaS), and supplier financing programs are increasingly accessible. Some businesses also leverage tax incentives, accelerated depreciation schemes, or government grants aimed at digital transformation and productivity improvements.

For smaller warehouses facing growth pressure, automation is not just about replacing people, it’s about building scalable, resilient operations that can compete efficiently in a demanding marketplace.
