One of the most common enquiries we get at Davies & Robson relates to the use of WMS systems, either within an ERP system such as SAP, or as a bespoke, interfaced system. The conversation normally starts with the client saying that, “… the logistics operation is working ok in terms of orders being received, planned, picked, packed, and dispatched. However, there is a lot of manual intervention and so many spreadsheet workarounds happening outside of the system. Can you help us?”
The answer is nearly always yes, and the outcome an improvement, but the causes of the issue are often complex and require a detailed, disciplined, and structured approach to the project in conjunction with dedicated users who are willing to commit time and effort to resolving the problem. Whilst every project is different, the following steps are often common to all:
Understand the WMS/ERP system
- Conduct a full “as is” process review with the users
- Map the process in detail
- Develop a future “to be” process, showing where the system can be used to replace current sub-optimal processes
It is often after this first stage where things begin to stall, as the next stages require real commitment which often involves working with a parent company (often in a different territory), a third-party IT service provider, or both. This is also where the supporting consultant can add real value in pushing the necessary changes through, and “fighting the corner” of the client. Examples of steps in this second stage are:
- Configuration & customisation
- Comprehensive user training
- Data migration
- Pilot testing
- Sign off
- Monitoring, maintaining & further optimising
If this is a familiar story in your business, where things “work ok” but too many spreadsheets are still being used outside of the core system, give Davies & Robson a call to find out how we can help you fully optimise your WMS system and processes.
